What exactly makes a hotel “boutique”? Boutique refers to the hotel's size and focus on unique, quaint style. Unlike their sprawling counterparts, boutique hotels boast a smaller number of rooms, allowing for a more intimate guest experience.
This intimacy translates into a dedication to exceptional service, where the staff knows your name, remembers your preferences, and goes the extra mile to ensure your comfort.
Family-run, at heart
But the true magic lies in the essence of “family-run.” These hotels are infused with the heart and soul of the families who own and operate them. The decor reflects their personal style and heritage, often showcasing local art and handcrafted furniture. Every detail, from the carefully curated breakfast spread to the plush throws on the bed, whispers a story of passion and care.
In today's fast-paced world, where everything feels mass-produced and impersonal, boutique hotels offer a refreshing escape. They're a haven for travellers seeking authenticity and a connection to the places they visit.
A century of welcome
Mukima Manor is now a century old. Built in the 1930s by Colonel Thomas Chippendale Lewin, who shaped the original house, the manor was bought in 2003 by my mother Leslie, who saw past the ruin and into the home it could become. She rebuilt it cedar by cedar, season by season, until it was sound. Then she planted. Then she let the land begin to return.
Today, my husband Shawn and I continue the work, quieter-edged, wider, more wellness-led. The same Samburu warriors my mother trusted still guard the gates. The same gardeners she taught still tend the beds. And the same belief, that hospitality is something you do for people, not to them, still shapes everything.
What makes us, us
Nine ensuite bedrooms, all named for what grows here, Wild Mint, Wild Thyme, Wisteria, Wildflower. Two private chefs working to the rhythm of the house. Full board, no buffet, no fixed dinner hour, no clipboard. Spa treatments in the garden pavilion. A library, a cinema, a drawing room with a fire and old paper light. 300 acres of rewilded forest you can walk through alone if you want to. A mountain on the horizon that watches over everything.
We are small on purpose. We will stay that way.
